World class performance from TNT

23-Dec-2005

Express delivery giant TNT is on top of the world after being ranked amongst the globe's most health and safety conscious organisations.

Assessors from the British Safety Council (BSC) awarded TNT Express Services the coveted international safety certification - OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) - following an intensive month-long examination of the company's health and safety policies and practices.

OHSAS marks TNT Express Services' debut on the international health and safety stage, having already achieved the UK quality benchmark for health and safety - the British Safety Council's prestigious 5 Star grading - for three consecutive years.

Eleven TNT sites came under the OHSAS microscope. Beginning at the company's head office in Atherstone, Warwickshire, safety experts went on to inspect TNT's depots in Birmingham, Alton, Southampton, Barking, Carlisle, Dublin, Enfield, Llantrisant, and Manchester International, as well as its Lount Sortation & Contact Centre in Leicestershire.

David Ballard, Director General of the BSC, presenting the OHSAS 18001 certification congratulated TNT. He said: "Health and safety is not a one-off it's something you have to do 24 hours-a-day, and I'm delighted to say TNT Express Services are among the finest exponents of all that is good about health and safety."

The OHSAS success follows on from TNT accumulating a record 16 BSC Swords of Honour - an unsurpassed achievement in the field of health and safety management.

Neil Griffiths, Director of Health, Safety and Environmental for TNT Express Services, said: "Safe workplaces are crucial to the well-being of our employees and the effectiveness of our operation.

"The OHSAS audit is very demanding but thanks to our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, every site passed with flying colours. We are proud to have achieved this international hallmark of excellence, especially as the BSC assessor judged the TNT Express UK Safety Management System to be one of the best he had seen."

Nigel Barton, Director of Operations for TNT Express Services UK and Ireland, said: "TNT yet again leads the industry as the standard-bearer for health and safety best practice. The OHSAS certification is also an important milestone in our drive to become a leading exponent of corporate sustainability."

The company's health and safety success comes hot on the heels of news that TNT Express Services' parent company, TNT NV, has joined the ranks of the world's most ethically-conscious, people-centred and environmentally-aware corporations.

TNT Express Services UK and Ireland's efforts helped TNT NV become a member of the Dow Jones Corporate Sustainability Index, an elite band of the globe's biggest firms that successfully combine profitability with sustainability.
