Corporate Sustainability
Overview
TNT Express operates in more than 200 countries and, with such a substantial global presence, the company believes it is imperative that it is a positive force for good in society which is why it is committed to the challenge of Corporate Sustainability (CS).
We recognise our responsibility to take care of the environment in which we operate and minimise any negative impact that our activities have on the communities in which we operate.
Strong evidence exists to show that organisations that adopt a more 'sustainable' approach to business enjoy positive benefits. Financial organisations such as Dow Jones have found that companies with a strong commitment and performance on CS have enjoyed greater levels of profitability than similar companies without any commitment to CS.
TNT Express Services UK & Ireland made a substantial contribution to the success its parent company, TNT N.V. the Dutch-based express, mail and logistics giant in its first year of appearing in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).
TNT recorded an overall rating of 75 out of a possible 100, the highest recorded score in the transport and express delivery category.
The prestigious DJSI tracks the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide, organisations that combine business success with an ethical, caring and responsible approach across a variety of areas including economic, environmental and social criteria.
TNT Philosophy
TNT believes that CS creates a positive impact in three distinct areas:
People
Planet
Profits/Economy
People
In the UK & Ireland we employee 10,600 people. On a global scale TNT N.V. provides jobs and prosperity to well over 160,000 people. We have a positive impact on our employees by:
- Recruiting fairly and responsibly
- Creating wealth
- Providing high quality training so our people perform better and in so doing upgrade the skill base of the community
- Adopt a 'home grown timber' approach to develop and promote people
- Ensure equal and fair treatment for all
- Maintain safe and secure workplaces
- Reward and recognise good work
We also have a positive effect on people in the wider community by:
- Supporting charities such as Wooden Spoon, Moving the World (World Food Programme, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Young Enterprise and others
- Demonstrating ethics and TNT values
- Giving due care and attention to our neighbours and local communities
- Practising human rights
- Being a good neighbour by minimising noise and other pollution from our planes, depots and avoiding any nuisance factors such as litter and inconsiderate parking.
Planet
- Working to high environmental standards and adopting best practice i.e. ISO14001 at Wellingborough Depot
- Developing new 'greener' vehicles and fuel e.g. hybrid electro-diesel vans and bio-diesel fuel trial
- Reducing energy consumptions levels e.g. driving economically, switching off equipment when not is use
- Reducing pollution e.g. disposal of waste correctly
- Recycling materials
- Reuse scrap paper/envelopes
- Conserving water
- Using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric to provide us with 15% of all our energy needs
Profits/Economy
- Creating and maintaining jobs
- Paying wages enabling employees to buy goods and services thus boosting the economy and paying taxes to Government
- A flourishing economy means greater levels of manufacturing and business activity and therefore we are more likely to be transporting goods for customers
- Enhanced profits encourages more investment in our company. This in turn enables us to create more jobs
The underlying aspirations of the TNT approach to CS is threefold:
- Help people realise their potential
- Meet the needs of the current generation without producing a poorer world for our children
- Ensure the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
