Hong Kong volunteers raise over HK$150,000 towards World Food Programme
(Hong Kong, 1 June 2011) - Local football legend Leslie Santos teamed up with the Chelsea Football Club Soccer School (Hong Kong) and joined families, colleagues, and friends to walk towards a brighter future for the millions of children around the globe who are struggling to survive without enough food. On Sunday 29 May 2011, approximately 300 volunteers took to the Tai Po waterfront park to raise more than HK$150,000 towards the World Food Programme’s (WFP) school meals initiative. At the same time, thousands of people walked in 24-time zones, in 24 hours, to raise awareness about hunger for one day, and raise money to feed vulnerable school children across the world.
Walk the World is the joint effort of WFP and its corporate partners, led by TNT, Unilever and DSM. Employees from these companies walk with WFP Goodwill Ambassadors, staff, and beneficiaries as well as government and NGO partners to show their solidarity in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
Edward Lau, Managing Director, TNT Express Hong Kong, commented, “‘We are thrilled with the success of this year’s Walk the World. One in seven people go to bed hungry each night, the money raised from Walk the World will make a difference to the lives of thousands of children – it was fantastic to see the level of support for such a worthwhile cause.”
