It will be subject to monthly adjustments based on a rounded average of the spot price for a barrel of crude oil, as published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). To download the latest price table (in csv format) from their website, click here. Crude oil is the base product to produce jet fuel and truck diesel and is a fair index base for both air and road transport.

All shipments sent on or after the 1st of January 2005 have been subject to the surcharge. The fuel surcharge varies in 0.5% steps and is updated on a monthly basis according to the following scale:

NB: There is a 1-month lag in the application of the index
. For example, the monthly average price for fuel in November 2007 was published during the second week of December 2007 and was used to determine the applicable surcharge in January 2008. TNT will publish the resulting surcharge on this web page at least two weeks prior to application of the surcharge.

TNT reserves the right to change the fuel surcharge index and table with or without notice. Both the amount and duration of the surcharge will be determined at TNT's sole discretion.

Please check this website regularly for any upates.

Security Surcharge

TNT places the highest priority on maintaining and delivering the fastest, most reliable and safest service to our global customers. In view of the tighten security measures, TNT applies a security surcharge at 1.5% to all international shipments sent on or after 1st July 2004.

Out of Area Surcharge

Out of area surcharge of HKD 3.5 per Kg, with a minimum of HKD 80 per consignment will be applied each time an express or economy shipment is delivered to or picked up in a remote and less-accessible location. For the complete out of area postcode, Please Click here.

Enhanced Security Surcharge

TNT is implementing additional procedures, activities and investments to safeguard our customers' shipments whilst in our custody, following recent well publicised incidents involving the international transportation of shipments containing illegal explosive devices. To partially offset the additional costs an Enhanced Security Surcharge will be applied from 12 December 2010.

The surcharge will be applied as a charge per kg in the following manner:

  • HKD 0.50 per kg
  • Minimum charge of HKD 5.00 per consignment
  • Maximum charge of HKD 107.00 per consignment
  • Applied to all international Express, Economy Express as well as Special service shipments

Special Handling Surcharges

Freight of a non-standard nature creates special challenges within our networks.

To ensure that your shipments are delivered on time and in perfect condition, please familiarise yourself with the types of shipments that require special handling.

Below you will find four "Special Handling" categories where an additional surcharge is applied to compensate for the additional costs incurred.

Health & Safety (HS)
Items that could cause injury such as unwrapped metals or undeclared hazardous goods.

Non-stackable (NS)
Non-stackable items - for example pyramid pallets - are pallets which have been built to prevent or limit other items from being placed on top, creating additional handling time and inefficient use of available network capacity.

Non-conveyable (NC)
Non-conveyable items are items which weigh less than 30 kgs (actual), are non-palletised, cannot be handled in our network via our automated conveyor systems if:

  • One or more of the dimensions exceeds 1.2m (l) x 0.7m (w) x 0.6m (h),
  • Items, packaged or un-packaged  which are tubular or cylindrical shapes that cannot sit and remain flat on the conveyor system and are therefore manually handled,
  • Liquids in drums or bottles, that when transported via the conveyors, would be unstable and risk falling off the conveyor and causing damage to the shipment, other customers' shipments and/or injury to employees

Exceeds Dimensions (ED)
Items weighting 30 kgs or more (actual/dead) which under normal circumstances would be transported on "standard" dimensional pallets (for example, euro-pallets) enabling efficient handling via TNT's normal hub pallet processes, but cannot for the reasons stated below:

  • Weight and/or dimensions exceed TNT's maximum dimensions and weights
  • International Express services within Europe dimensions exceed 1.2 (l) x 1.2 (w) x 1.5 (h) m
  • Items, packaged or un-packaged which are tubular or cylindrical shapes that cannot be palletised and require manual handling with mechanical aids and/or more than one person.
  • Items between 30 and 70 kgs which are not palletised and require more than person or mechanical aids to be used to handle the item safely
