Johannesburg, South Africa, September, 2010 – TNT Express Namibia has recently been certifi as the first Namibian company to achieve the SA 8000 standard of approval. SA 8000 is a humanitarian standard that deals with social accountability within an organization. This key milestone takes TNT’s Corporate Responsibility initiatives within the region to a new level.
TNT South Africa has been certified since 2006 on SA 8000, and TNT Namibia has been part of the South African audit. “This achievement marks the first time that TNT Namibia has been audit separately from TNT South Africa; achieving the accritation at its first attempt,” says Mary Mashiane, Corporate Responsibility Manager of TNT Express. “As a global business, we are committ to promoting and supporting both global and local social responsibility campaigns. Our aim is to improve the social impact we have on our employees and customers from a quality perspective,” she adds.
The SA 8000 certification is bas upon the principles of international human rights norms and is the most widely recogniz as the global standard issu by Social Accountability International (SAI); an organisation concerned with managing human rights in the workplace. The standard is design to maintain decent working conditions throughout a supply chain. It measures the performance of companies in eight key areas: child labour; forc labour; health and safety; free association and collective bargaining; discrimination; disciplinary practices; working hours and compensation. SA 8000 also provides for a social accountability management system to demonstrate ongoing conformance with the standard.
In December 2009, TNT South Africa successfully retained its SA 8000 certification which was first issued in 2006. “This further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to ensure that our activities are adding economic, environmental and social value to the markets that we serve,” she concludes.
