Johannesburg, South Africa, 20 October 2010 – TNT Express, a leading global business to business express delivery company, has partner with the Johannesburg City Parks and the Gauteng Provincial Government in a bid to offset its local carbon emissions. The partnership comes as part of TNT’s “Planet Me” initiative that aims to ruce CO2 emissions resulting from the company's operational activities.
To commemorate this first-of-its-kind public /private-partnership between the three parties, TNT Express, Johannesburg City Parks and the Gauteng Provincial Government joined together to plant trees along the Albertina Sisulu highway near Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo Airport. The objective was to offset TNT’s carbon emissions, and in particular, to compensate for staff’s air travel over the period of June 2009 until June 2010. The event marks the first of many similar initiatives that the partnership will undertake over the coming months.
“Our collaboration with the Johannesburg City Parks was born from the ne for TNT to plant with a purpose. This particular location was chosen because it is in the heart of ’s industrial district. It is also close to the airport, where a large amount of CO2 is emitted on a daily basis,” said Mary Mashiane, Corporate Responsibility Manager of TNT Express, South Africa.
“As a transport company, TNT acknowlges that it partially contributes to the problem of CO2 being emitted into the earth’s atmosphere. Through the “Planet Me” Choose Orange program, we have not only demonstrat our ongoing commitment to caring for the environment, but have also implement various programs to address our environmental impact. TNT’s mission states that the company seeks to share responsibility for the world in which it operates, and hence we view the tree planting as a step in the right direction,” conclud Mashiane.
