Shipping sprays and aerosols

These everyday items are considered dangerous goods, so there are few things you need to know before you get going.

What makes them dangerous?

The compressed gas that makes sprays and aerosols work is hazardous in certain conditions and potentially flammable. What’s more, the contents of some cans (such as lubricants, cleaning products and deodorants) may be toxic.

If packed incorrectly, there’s a risk that aerosols might explode, catch fire or contaminate other shipments. Damage can also turn these items into potentially harmful projectiles, with the gas element acting as a high-powered propellant.

What does this mean for my shipment?

Shipments containing sprays and aerosols usually fall under the UN 1950 and UN 1956 classification of dangerous goods regulations. To move these items safely and compliantly, they need to be packed, marked and documented in line with these regulations.

A failure to comply may prove costly and could result in accidents – putting your shipment and our staff at risk. That’s why you always need to inform us when you’re intending to ship sprays and aerosols.

Packing your shipment safely

Perfumery products require a little extra care to pack, but it’s worth taking the time to do it properly.

Not only will poor packaging potentially damage your goods, it can also make them harder to process – running the risk of costly hold-ups. Here are a few tips to ensure that your perfumes get to their destination quickly and safely.

Use combination packaging

Keep sprays and aerosols in secure rows with inner packaging before placing them in robust outer packaging.

Don’t ship without a lid

Ensure that each item has a cap or some form of protection against accidental leakage.

Fill any empty spaces

Pack any spare space in your shipment with dunnage to prevent goods from moving during transit.

While these tips are a general guide to help keep your sprays and aerosols securely packed, they may vary depending on the weight, volume and perceived risk of your goods. Ultimately it’s your responsibility to ensure your shipment complies with all required regulations – so be sure to take your time when packing.

Your goods’ Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) can help provide more information about how to safely pack and prepare your perfumes for shipping. This can usually be found on the manufacturer’s website.
