TNT Express will take delivery of the first fleet of Euro 6 Scania trucks in Australia when the ultra low emission vehicles arrive in October, part of a significant Scania fleet purchase during 2014.

The P-series prime movers will be powered by Scania’s 450hp six-cylinder in-line engine that uses a combined Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology solution to achieve compliance with the most stringent emission controls yet legislated in Europe.

Torque peaks at 2,350Nm from as little as 1,000rpm providing exceptional driveability especially when under load, as well as impressive fuel economy and extremely low emissions.

In May, Scania delivered five new P 440 6x4 Euro 5 prime movers to TNT Express, for use in Melbourne, collecting and delivering loads for aggregation.

The P 440s are working in both b-double and single trailer configurations.

In addition to the five Euro 6 prime movers in the second tranche of orders, TNT Express will also take delivery of four further P 440 Euro 5 prime movers before the year’s end, for use in Adelaide and Perth.

“TNT has a strong history of selecting low emission vehicles, and the Scania Euro 6 order now extends this philosophy further into the heavy duty class above 16-tonnes,” Mr Alberse says.

“In Europe Scania continues to be a leader in the supply of Euro 6 compliant solutions. We have been supplying Euro 6 solutions for more than two years, and we have continually expanded the range of engines available to customers there, including the availability of 450hp engines that can run on 100% biodiesel or a just-released version that uses SCR-only, which is ideal for long-distance applications. At present Scania’s European Euro 6 portfolio amounts to 18 engine options,” he says.

In Melbourne, the newly-delivered TNT Express vehicles will be used in local operations, according to Rod Barnes, TNT Express’ Director, Southern Region.

Investing in Euro 6 vehicles is another illustration of how TNT is working towards long-term environmental sustainability.

“The aim of this initiative is to continue our work towards integrating more environmentally friendly vehicles onto our roads to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and revolutionise the way vehicles function,” Mr Barnes says.

“TNT has been at the forefront of using low emissions vehicles. In fact, we pioneered the introduction of low-emission hybrid vehicles for light-duty applications after commissioning our first hybrid truck in early 2008. This investment in Euro 6 technology for our heavy-duty fleet is a logical extension of that.

“Globally we’re very focused on meeting our CO2 efficiency objectives, and while the fuel-saving benefits make this a smart investment for us as a company the broader environmental benefits for our customers are a very important consideration as well,” he said.

“We’re currently rolling out a significant infrastructure investment aimed at driving our future development and growth, and investing in these ultra low emissions vehicles will play a key role in continuing our journey as a sustainable and environmentally aware business.

“The new trucks will be working mainly in Melbourne, and may also visit Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Traralgon.

“The new Scania P 450s will be delivering and collecting trailers. Typically we will deliver empty trailers to the customers’ premises in the morning and collect loaded trailers in the afternoon, return the trailer to our distribution centres and then put the contents into our national distribution system,” Mr Barnes says.

TNT National Fleet and Equipment Manager, Kurt Grossrieder, says Scania’s low cab design and two-step entry really appealed. Swedish cab design is important to the company from a safety pointy of view within its operations, he says.

“The Scania support network in Melbourne works really well for us, as we are very well located next to a Scania branch in Laverton,” Mr Grossrieder says.

“The B-double combinations will be pulling around 45-tonnes. There will be variation from load to load, or time of day, as the trucks will be doing different things throughout so it is hard to benchmark the fuel performance, but the emissions reduction is the key,” he says.
